11 Women Ministers in Modi’s Cabinet: Highest Since 2004

Recently, the Union Cabinet expanded with women ministers that are 11 in numbers, the highest in the last 17 years. In the council of ministers, 78 are total in number which includes 15 cabinet ministers, and 28 state ministers who took the oath. 7 women out of a total of 11 women ministers were MPs from the BJP, now inducted to the new council of ministers. Women who oathed as the ministers of states (MoS) includes Shobha Karandlaje, Meenakshi Lekhi, Darshana Vikram Jardosh, Annapurna Devi, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Pratima Bhoumik, and Anupriya Singh Patel. Before the final expansion, the Modi Cabinet was having four female ministers named Smriti Irani, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Renuka Singh Saruta. 

Now, let’s take a look at Narendra Modi government’s 11 female ministers of the new cabinet: 

1. Sushri Shobha Karandlaje 

Karandlaje has been appointed MoS under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. She is serving her second-term parliaments as well. She was working in Karnataka’s Udupi-Chikmagalur as the Loksabha MP. She held multiple portfolios in the Karnataka government just before joining the Union governments that include Rural Development, Food and Civil Supplies, etc. She has a Masters of Arts (M.A.) degree from Mangalore University.

2. Meenakshi Lekhi

Lekhi is a famous lawyer and the Minister of Parliament from Delhi who is serving a second term in Parliament. Now, she has been appointed as the Minister of Parliament in MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) and the Ministry of Culture. She also served as a member of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). Minakshi Lekhi has done LLB from Delhi University.

3. Darshana Vikram Jardosh 

In the Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Textiles, Darshana Vikram Jardosh was appointed as MoS. She is a Member of Parliament Gujarat (Surat) who is serving the third term. Before winning elections in Lok Sabha, he was a Corporator from Surat Municipal Corporation and also, he was serving as a member of the Gujarat Social Welfare Board. Darshana Vikram Jardosh from Surat has done B.Com.

4. Annapurna Devi 

Annapurna Devi was appointed as Minister of State in the Ministry of Education. She has done MA from Ranchi University, it is her first tenure serving as an MP. She won the seat from Jharkhand (Koderma). She holds a varied portfolio with ministries such as the Consultative Committee, Committee on Empowerment of Women and Members, Ministry of Power, and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

5. Dr. Bharati Pawar 

Dr. Bharati Pawar is the first time Member of Parliament from Dindori in Maharashtra. Now he has the responsibility of Minister of State under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Dr. Pawar also served as a member of Nashik Zila Parishad, holding an MBBS degree.

6. Pratima Bhoumik Pratima 

Bhoumik is a Lok Sabha MP of BJP from West Tripura. She has served as MoS under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of India. She is the only and first-ever resident of Tripura who made it in the history of India. She is holding a degree in BioScience (Tripura University).

7. Smriti Irani 

She emerged as a giant killer from the time when she defeated Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi. Recently, she was appointed as MoS for the Ministry of Women and Child Development. Before coming into politics, Smriti Irani was a model, producer, television actress, etc.

8. Niranjan Jyoti 

Niranjan Jyoti was serving as MP from the Fatehpur constituency. Now, she has been appointed as the Minister of States under the Ministry of Rural Development. Before holding the Rural development office in Narendra Modi’s Cabinet 2019, she was holding the charge of Ministry of States for Food Processing Industries in 2014.

9. Nirmala Sitharaman 

Nirmala Sitharaman is serving under the Indian Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs. She was a member of the Rajya Sabha, and from the upper house of the Indian Parliament, since 2014. Before leading the Ministry of Finance, she was serving in the Ministry of Defence.

10. Renuka Singh 

Renuka Singh was serving as MP from Chhattisgarh for BJP. Currently, she has been appointed as the Minister of State under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, completing the second tenure during Modi’s ministry. At first, Renuka Singh was elected from the Legislative Assembly of Chhattisgarh in 2003, and then became the Minister of State of independent charge under the Woman & Child Development and Family welfare.

11. Anupriya Singh Patel 

Under PM Modi’s first term, Patel was appointed as the Union Minister of State for Health in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. She held a Lok Sabha seat from Mirzapur. Anupriya Singh Patel is a 40-year-old MP who has also served in Uttar Pradesh as MLA. She is holding an MBA degree from Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, at Kanpur.
